Among the brave.

I walked into a boutique late last year, mostly because it had a sale sign in the window. A shirt caught my eye and as I moved it from the rack, the tag came into view revealing the brand: Among The Brave. I remember holding the fabric in my hands and immediately deciding I had to have it. Fortunately, it fit.

Among the brave.
Lord, let me be counted among the brave.

Sometimes life unfolds in ways we wouldn’t choose. While we don’t always have a choice about what happens to us, popular advice reminds us that the choices we do have are in how we respond. But oh, the challenge of choosing. Yes, we’re growing and changing all the time (hopefully), and virtue develops within us like precious jewels refined under fire. The Holy Spirit is at work in us; quietly, slowly and surely. But we still must choose where and how we will stand.

Valour: Great courage in the face of danger, especially battle.

I don’t think bravery is something we either have or don’t have. I think even courage is a choice.

Lord, I choose to stand among the brave.

Not on my own, among others. Among the brave! There’s strength when we stand alongside fellow travelers, shoulder to shoulder with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Among Everywoman! Can I just say how deeply helpful it is to stand among you all; wāhine toa, together clinging tight to faith and declaring ‘Lord, not my will, but yours be done’. And I don’t choose courage with vague optimism and my fingers crossed. I choose courage because I know I’m not alone. I know I can trust in the Lord’s care and provision, ultimately in His sovereignty.

Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the Lord. Psalm 31:24
Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come. Proverbs 31:25

Retail therapy, am I right? An impulse buy now makes me smile every time I see it in my wardrobe. Because despite a heartache that takes my breath away, I feel honored that God would clothe me with virtue and valour and entrust me with this journey.
